Reviews and Current Trends
UK e-Learning - a Tale of Two Markets (Jan 06)
Kineo believes that we are seeing two very different and contrasting
trends taking place in the e-Learning market. In the technology side
of the market (LMS, LCMS and Virtual Classrooms), we are seeing
clear consolidation. By contrast, in the bespoke e-Learning space,
the market is becoming more fragmented than ever. Here, Kineo
analyses the trends.

University Solutions: Partnering for Real-World
Results (Mar 06)
The corporate world largely under-uses four-year universities and
community colleges as resources. The Chief Learning Officer
magazine Business Intelligence Board survey shows that almost half
of the companies surveyed have no relationship with a university,
and 62 percent of companies Bellevue University surveyed are not
satisfied with the relationship they do have. The challenge to
corporations is to learn how to tap university resources
successfully. Chief

Corporate Universities: What Works and What Doesn't
(Mar 06)
Strengthening their human capital is one of the top issues facing
chief executive officers, according to a recent survey of 500 CEOs
conducted by The Economist Intelligence unit. In fact, as one senior
executive from a large financial services firm said, "We need to
out-learn our competition in order to attract, retain and excite the
best talent in the industry." Why has human capital management
become such a central issue for senior executives?

How to Find SMEs (Jan 06)
People who
possess a special skill or knowledge of a particular subject area
are widely considered organizational assets—especially for training
managers and instructional designers. In fact, subject-matter
experts (SMEs) play integral roles in course design, development and
implementation because they solely possess the information that
training designers need for a project. SMEs can be exemplary
performers, supervisors or even the end users of the learning
solutions. However, identifying the right SMEs for a project is not
as simple as one might think. It is critical not only to find people
with the knowledge and skills necessary to create a course or
curriculum, but also to find people that want to participate in the
development process as well.

Which Was First: Training or Relevance?
(Mar 06)
Back in my early classroom teaching days, I (Bob Mosher) used to
start a course by asking students why they were attending. I wanted
to know what they wanted to get out of the class. I was always
surprised how many would simply reply, “I have no idea. That’s why
I’m here. My office just purchased XYZ system, and I’m here to see
what it does. Then I’ll take that information back to my group, and
we can figure out what we want to do next.” In other words, training
was expected to precede relevance.

For Chief Learning Officers, Alignment is Key (Mar 06)
Chief learning officers and training
program leaders play an important role in the results culture
emerging in organizations. This evolution has inspired the latest
wave of learning programs — programs that lead directly to
performance results. The key to results is alignment: alignment of
intellectual capital and advancement of knowledge to strategic
goals. Training leaders who can show executives how the alignment of
education programs and learning events develops intellectual capital
toward the achievement of strategic, performance, and operational
goals have earned their place at the C-level table.

Simulation Software - Creating Training Simulations (Mar 06)
Technology-based training systems, such as e-learning and virtual
reality, have been gaining ground on conventional training
techniques during the past decade or so. In the past,
simulation-based learning was solely provided through expensive
workstations. However, today such workstations are becoming obsolete
and computer- and Web-based simulations are now the norm. Advances
in technology have made technology-based simulation training more
desirable and effective for many different skill areas and
industries. But perhaps—most importantly—technology-based simulation
training is attributed to increased information retention and
therefore, employees maintain the skills necessary to react
proficiently during critical situations as well as during their
everyday job responsibilities.

What Lies Beyond e-Learning (Mar 06)
Just when we
thought we had e-learning all figured out, it’s changing again.
After years of experimentation and the irrational exuberance that
characterized the late 1990s, we find our views of e-learning more
sober and realistic. This is a good sign; we can make more rational
forecasts of how the field will evolve. It also presents some
challenges, and the direction we are heading may not be the path we
originally thought we were on.
