Future Directions in e-Learning - Research Report 2006 (Apr 06)
The second annual report asked Guild members to take a close look at
the e-learning programs and initiatives in their organizations and
report what they expect to see in the next twelve months. More than
650 industry professionals responded to the survey. The research
found that, once again, e-learning remains a “rapidly growing
practice with a bright future” in the vast majority of respondent
organizations, according to researchers. Most respondents indicated
that the term “e-learning” serves a useful purpose and is here to
stay.

Challenges to Global Training (Apr 06)
Global business is
modern business. Thanks to speedy, easily customizable technology
options, even the smallest company has the option of doing business
around the world. Although there are typically challenges, providing
effective training solutions boils down to assurance, or in this
case, ensur-ance.

Hanging Loose - Informal Instruction (Apr 06)
o many, the designation “informal” within informal learning seems to
indicate training that is careless and disorganized in nature, and
thus not appropriate for so-called “serious” subject matter.
However, the informal label refers more to the educational
environment as experienced by the learner, not to how the content is
developed and delivered or what it covers. Indeed, as with a
professional wrestling match, the free-for-all character of informal
learning is the result of carefully calculated planning.

Why is writing for e-learning different (Apr 06)
As more and more organizations venture into e-learning for its
convenience and effectiveness, they employ writers to help them with

When Is E-Learning the Right Choice (Apr 06)
With the advent of
newer, faster, better technological solutions, it can be tempting to
buy in to advertised hype and projections, and implement online
training strategies prematurely. But the wrong type of training
delivery method can be as detrimental to learning as the wrong type
of course or content. E-learning delivery is no exception. It pays
to assess what kind of training you’re offering, the intended
audience and the result you’d like to see following training
culmination before pushing an e-learning solution.

Link Learning and Performance to Maximize Application Functionality
(Apr 06)
Modern technology plays
a critical role in the delivery of learning programs and in most
employees’ performance. When technology systems align with
development programs that address the just-in-time needs of an
organization’s workforce, learning becomes the perfect tool with
which to encourage high employee performance levels. But in order
for that just-in-time synthesis between learning and performance to
take place, senior-level learning executives must create effective
learning that will facilitate user operation of existing
applications and maximize functionality of all systems.

Becoming a Trainer - Do You Have What It Takes (Apr 06)
The path to
becoming an information technology trainer is not simply achieved
through a bachelor’s degree program. In fact, budding professionals
with minimal or no real-world experience rarely find opportunities
to train. Experienced IT professionals are the best candidates for
training positions. Most organizations take a multi-pronged approach
to finding qualified IT trainers. They often look at potential
candidates’ education and background, earned certifications,
on-the-job experiences and, of course, their presentation skills.

Teaching Techies (Apr 06)
Highly technical
professionals—whether they be IT professionals, engineers or
scientists—have a certain reputation in the corporate world. They’re
assumed to be somewhat unconventional in their work habits, as well
as possessed of eccentric personalities. Often reticent—or esoteric
when they actually do communicate—they’re nonetheless highly
brilliant and capable employees. These perceptions are probably spot
on for some techies, half-right for others and wildly off the mark
for several of them. But this view of them is fairly entrenched and
frequently colors the way in which organizational leaders deal with
them, including in the training and development sphere.

are plenty of vendors that offer a variety of collaboration tools to

Creating Culturally Relevant Training (Apr 06)
Creating culturally relevant training is an essential piece in an
overall development philosophy. Training professionals can no longer
be content with offerings that address critical business strategies
and needs. Training also must be relevant for all members of a
global and culturally expansive workplace. After the ubiquitous
problem or training-needs assessment, ensure that you know your
audience and can partner with one or more representatives from the
dominant cultures affected to make sure you’re creating training
that is digestible for a diverse audience.
