Brain Research, Instructional Strategies, and e-Learning - Making
the Connection (Sep 09)
Instructional strategies (sometimes called "pedagogies" or
“andragogies”) and their supporting tactics are the heart of
instructional design. Research is giving designers much valuable
information about the way the brain works and how humans learn. We
can use this information to guide our designs and make much better
use of traditional strategies, and to create new methods to improve
learning.

Case Studies and Projects
How Do You Manage in a Downturn (Aug 09)
In 2001, Cisco Systems was a decentralized company organized around
three lines of business (LOBs). Each LOB was focused on a customer
segment. The first was service providers such as AT&T, Verizon and
Comcast. The second was enterprises, some of them large
multinationals. The third was small- to medium-sized commercial
companies. Each LOB produced a line of products that were customized
for that segment’s needs, generating enormous growth during the
dot-com bonanza. Of course, that growth came to an abrupt end in
2001 when Cisco announced losses of $2.69 billion and layoffs of 18
percent of the workforce in the first quarter of the year. Cisco
used the crisis to transform itself.

Instructional Design for End User Application Training (Aug 09)
For instructional
designers without a background or experience in application
development, producing e-Learning for end-user training during the
development can be a great challenge. It can be difficult to
communicate with the development team because of time constraints,
and especially because of a lack of familiarity with the
documentation that the team produces.
