Training Spending Stuck in Neutral (Feb 10)
An analysis of
overall spending on training in the U.S. between 1986 and 2008,
based on the Training Annual Industry Survey, indicates that,
in inflation-adjusted dollars, spending on training in 1986 and 2008
only differed by 1.5 percent, despite a 38 percent increase in
workers since 1986.

Learning Directors Network Market Barometer for
4Q09 and Forecast for 1Q10 (Feb 10)
While 27% of the
respondent companies reported growth in total IT training revenues
in excess of 10% in Q4 compared to the same quarter of 2008, 45%
reported a decline of more than 10%. The overall result is that of
continued decline, albeit at a slower rate than in the previous two
quarters. Once again, the larger companies suffered more than the
smaller ones, with the weighted index at -25 being significantly
worse than the unweighted index of -10. The forecast for the current
quarter shows a continuing reduction in the rate of decline – but
still no sign of growth. The consensus of the forecasts is that the
market will shrink by 4% in Q1, and that the full year will be flat
– with predictions ranging from growth of 15% to a fall of 25%.

What happens after the training is as important as the training
itself
(Jan 10)
A great deal of Learning & Development effort goes into providing
the right training: good content targeting specific needs; well
designed; and delivered in the best possible way. Quite right too.
The problem is that we think it’s all over once the training is
delivered. There is much to do, so as soon as the training finishes,
our attention turns to making the next programme happen.
